Frequently Asked Questions

St. Anthony ToledoQ. What is the St. Anthony society?
A. The society is a group of individuals dedicated to preserve the history and memory of St. Anthony church.

Q. Is the primary goal to reopen the church as a parish?
A. No. Our goals have focused on obtaining the church from the diocese of Toledo and creating a museum similar to the St. Albertus museum in Detroit. You can learn more by visiting their web site at www.stalbertus.org

Q. What is the current status of St. Anthony church?
A. Currently, the church remains closed with apparently no plans for the future. However, many of its contents have been removed.

Q. Have you petitioned the diocese with your plan?
A. Yes. In fact the president of the society was invited to discuss the issue With Bishop Blair last October 2007. We have not had any contact with the Diocese since then.

Q. What do your plans consist of?
A. Specifically, we presented the following ideas:

  1. We would like two Sunday masses each month
  2. Christmas and Easter services
  3. The church would be rented for weddings, anniversaries and baptisms
  4. Cultural programs endorsed by the diocese
  5. Tours and lectures
  6. We would assume all financial responsibilities for maintenance and
    other costs

Q. Do you think that the society would be able to finance such a project?
A. Yes. We have met and discussed the matter with members of St. Albertus Detroit and they have been maintaining the church and more with fewer resources available to them.

Q. What will become of the old St. Anthony church if the current situation remains.
A.The church is showing the results of over three years of neglect. Our best guess is that it will eventually be razed.
